1. SESSION QUESTIONNAIRE

To also assist us with this, we would like to get to know you a little bit better and find out more about your expectations for your session, please click here to complete your important session questionnaire BEFORE your session so I can prepare properly for you>>.

2. CLOTHING, COLOURS & STYLE:

Okay, now that’s done….  The first question we get asked is what should I wear?  Well what you wear for your photo shoot is just as important to the overall image and shouldn’t be overlooked or done last minute, you will be looking at these images for a very long time to come!

Choose your clothing carefully.

We photograph in a relaxed style, with informal poses.  Have your clothing chosen way in advance and make sure that your outfit choices are comfortable and attractive.  What do your dream photos look like?

Style: soft and elegant?  Choose neutral colours with soft flowing fabrics… think creams, very soft pastels, oatmeals, light browns, tans, greys and slate blues.

Style: fun and fresh?  Choose co-ordinating colours (but not matchy, matchy) with bold accent colours.   Adding fun accessories like scarves,  headbands, hats etc can add a modern twist and sassy flair to your images.  Avoid logos and stripes.

Have a look through our online brochure below for more details on your specific session type.

Try to think of everyone’s outfits combined as one big outfit, lay them on your bed, you will want them to look good together but have some variety.  We have lots of examples for you, click here to give you an idea>>.  Ladies, if you are concerned about arms etc, then we would recommend the soft and elegant colour scheme with clothing (because you will be on a white background) and always sleeves.  If clothes are prone to creasing, bring them on a hanger to the studio to change into (we can’t airbrush creases out).

We prefer to shoot in bare feet for a comfortable natural look to the images, so please remember ladies (as mums are always so busy getting everyone else ready for the session) to paint your toenails/fingernails.  If you would like a more formal style please do not wear your shoes until you are in the studio, we can’t airbrush muddy/marked shoes!

Makeup: just slightly stronger than you would wear for normal daytime with foundation blending into neck so your neck isn’t paler.  Fake tan lines/marks show up really easily on photographs, if you are unsure how the applied finish will look as a professional to apply it for you.

3. PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION

Be well rested and well fed.

Don’t show up to a photo shoot on an empty stomach. I meet many families who come to a photo session with dinner scheduled at the end. If this is your plan, be sure to give everyone a healthy snack before the photo shoot as there won’t be time to stop for a snack during the session as it can ruin the spontaneity and fun.

Leave plenty of time to get ready.

Mums are often rushing around before a photo shoot, making sure that their family is dressed and ready. I always encourage mothers to have their hair and makeup professionally done. This will prepare mum for her pictures and when mum is feeling pretty and confident, this will reflect on the rest of the family as well. Leave plenty of time for showers, baths, dressing, and grooming. When a family shows up to a family photo session rushed and disorganised, it sets the tone for a rushed and disorganised session. Give yourself extra time so that you are ready before it’s time to head out that door.

Cheese is for crackers.

Please, parents… leave the “cheese” at home. Cheese is for crackers. So many times I have found parents who stand behind the me and scream, “Say cheese to the lady kids!” Yelling and demanding young children to look at the camera to smile will only stress your children out (not to mention me) and will result in strained, unnatural and often unflattering photographs. Step back, and allow me to naturally interact and talk with your children. This will result in natural, gorgeous smiles. Help me capture the true essence of your child’s personality by talking with and coaxing out those smiles naturally and easily.

Have fun with your family.

Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Give your wife a sweet kiss on the check. Tell your husband how much you love him and appreciate him for being there for your family. Have fun. Laugh. Giggle. Joke. Embrace. Kiss. Snuggle. Play. Doing these things will allow me to capture the emotion and true beauty of your family. Leave the stiff “cheese” faces for Aunt Mary at the next family reunion. Show me who you really are, so that I have the opportunity to capture your love through my lens.

NOT everyone has to be looking and smiling at the camera at the same time.

The best photographs are often the ones where everyone is engaged or interacting with each other. Understand that not every picture needs to have everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. If you are engaged as a family and loving on each other, your eyes will be on your family members and your smile with be natural. These are the photographs that you will cherish most because they depict your family connection and your love.
